Welcome to the third edition of food and wine matching with Small Victories Wine Co. This time we’re focusing on vegan wine and food matches, as all our wines are vegan!

VEGAN FOOD PAIRINGS FOR SPARKLING WINE

While sparkling wine (or Champagne) is often thought of as an aperatif or a celebratory drink for a toast at a wedding, however sparkling wines can be fabulous food wines, too.

And you don’t need to eat ‘fancy food’ with sparkling wines or Champagne. A perfect pairing is simply your favourite hot chips! Yes! This is because the acidity of the sparkling wines cuts through the fattiness of the chips making a magical pairing.

So sit down with a glass of our Small Victories Sparkling and your fave hot chips today 🥂

SUGGESTED VEGAN FOOD MATCHES FOR PINOT GRIS

Our Small Victories Pinot Gris is textural and zesty with a savoury finish, leading to these vegan food matches we suggest for Pinot Gris:

Sushi or cold rolls – fun to make at home as you add all the ingredients you love.

Potato and leek soup or a potato and leek tart with a cauliflower crust (use the recipe for this pizza base to form the base and sides of your tart.)

VEGAN FOOD PAIRINGS FOR VERMENTINO

Our Small Victories Vermentino is vibrant and fruity with notes of citrus on the nose and palate. So when thinking of great foods to match with it, think about something you might squeeze some lemon or lime onto. Some ideas include:

Nachos with guacamole, black beans and cashew cream or maybe this Enchilada-stuffed butternut. Or make a nourish bowl with all your favourite ingredients – think brown rice, kidney/black beans, roasted sweet potato or pumpkin, corn salsa, cashew cream, lettuce and avocado.

Hot chips with a spicy (vegan) mayo that you can make at home – simply add siracha, sambal olek and lemon juice to Kewpie or other vegan mayos.

Vegan ‘ceviche’ of avocado and citrus with hearts of palm. A fresh summer option!

WHAT VEGAN FOOD SHOULD I PAIR WITH ROSÉ?

Our Small Victories Rosé is crisp and juicy with hints of strawberries and cream in the aroma, and zesty red fruits and a savoury finish on the palate.

Everyone will love a fab platter with sundried tomatoes, homemade hummus, carrot sticks, olives, your favourite crackers or bread, some fresh fruit and maybe add some vegan cheese from Barossa locals All The Things.

An easy mid-week dinner match is simply a bowl of spaghetti with a tomato sauce. We love this traditional recipe from local Italian restaurant Casa Carboni – Spaghetti con Sugo al Pomodoro.

Or maybe just a pre-dinner snack of a handful of chilli-lime pepitas that you’ve baked at home!

VEGAN FOOD PAIRINGS FOR SANGIOVESE

Our Small Victories Sangiovese is medium bodied and super vibrant with a savoury finish.

Pizza is always a winner with Sangiovese, due to its Italian origins, so make your own at home or order in for your Friday night on the couch.

Pasta with a tomato and cashew cream sauce with roast pumpkin and basil will also make a great match.

This Sangiovese is a wine you can chill in the esky for a summer afternoon beverage to go with eggplant schnitzel on the bbq accompanied by charred zucchini, capsicum and corn.

SUGGESTED VEGAN FOOD MATCHES FOR SHIRAZ

Our Small Victories Shiraz is juicy to the max, with a spicy, punchy finish. It’s not your average Shiraz.

A great match is just a good ol’ burger filled with everything you love (including the pickles!) alongside some chunky sweet potato wedges.

You might be surprised, but this will also pair well with a chunk of your favourite (vegan) chocolate for a delicious after dinner treat.

VEGAN FOOD MATCHES FOR GRENACHE

Our Small Victories Old Vine Grenache is medium bodied and seriously delicious, with satsuma plum, musk and a savoury note on the palate.

I am all aboard the banh mi train – I always order a tofu banh mi when out, and I make them at home when I can source fresh Vietnamese rolls.

Another great match for a medium-bodied Grenache are rich salads like a roasted cherry tomato, chickpea and couscous salad or a summer panzanella.
