Vineyard

Variety Grenache and Mataro

Soil Greenock exhibits lean soils of red and brown clay mixed with some lighter sandy loams. Murtho exhibits red brown loam with some clay content on the upper bank of the Murray River.

Winemaking

Season the Riverland didn’t act in a typical fashion for the 2023 harvest. We took several trips to monitor the ripening of our Murtho portion of Grenache, picking later than we expected! Then only 9 days later we picked our Mataro and Grenache from Greenock (which would normally be around 3 weeks later).
Winemaking the Murtho Grenache was pressed on arrival at the winery for settling and fermentation on light lees. The Grenache and Mataro from Greenock were harvested together and pressed after several hours on skins to enhance colour and flavour development. Time on yeast lees for six weeks post fermentation helped develop a creamy, yet savoury mouthfeel.

Reviews / Awards

Refreshing style. Dry and saline. Hint of sweet raspberry but it’s all about ultra refreshment in a pale, dry manner. Lovely perfumed aspect to the aftertaste, dry, saline and fruity at once. Begs for food. Nice one. -Campbell Mattinson, The Wine Front
This is a classic blend of Grenache and Mataro from a combination of Ashmead family vineyards in Greenock and also Murtho in the Riverland. The Grenache steels the show showing aroma typicity with strawberry and sour cherry, alongside some juicier Ribena and jasmine notes from the muscly Mataro component. On the palate there is a watermelon kick with cranberry, ripe peach and some more delicate nuances of orange peel, honeysuckle and liquorice. It’s savoury, dry and refreshing! I’ve just been to the fish markets so going old-school here and eating prawns tossed in Rosé coloured prawn cocktail sauce, alongside thinly sliced Tuna sashimi with a soy-wasabi dressing. This Rosé tackles heat with ease and sits alongside the texture of the Tuna so nicely. -Matt Dunne, Wine Pilot
